I'm striking out with both highly popular fantasy series - The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss and the Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson.

The Tom Sue aspect of Mr. Kingkiller put me off, though I did enjoy the random bits of poetry the author put in.
  • it was the greatest silence of the three, wrapping the others inside itself. It was deep and wide as autumn’s ending. It was heavy as a great river-smooth stone. It was the patient, cut-flower sound of a man who is waiting to die.
  • “He’s right,” the smith’s prentice said. “Except it’s not carbon. You use coke to make steel. Coke and lime.” The innkeeper nodded deferentially to the boy. All the scars were smooth and silver, streaking him like lightning, like lines of gentle remembering.

There's nothing greatly wrong with the mistborns, but I'm not finding the struggle against tyranny that inspiring either. If the write worried that we don't know that Vin is overly cautious and skeptical of the rebel cause after he told us the fifth time, he worried needlessly. Listening to the audiobook in bits and pieces hurts the momentum too.
