"The Wild Party" [.]
Jun. 11th, 2005 09:02 amA while back there was a mefi thread about an artist who illustrated "Gravity's Rainbow" page by page. A discussion of different types of illustrations can be found on his website, in which Spiegelman is charged with "overillustration".
{The following is intercut with close-ups of Queenie's eyes. Very cinematic.}

But with eyes dark: engrossed:
As though she saw a ghost.
<>
Her lashes drooped; made a violet stain
Under each eye, like shadows of pain.
She held it a second,
<>
Then seemed to recover.
The candles flared: their flames sprang high:
The shadows leaned dishevelled, awry:
Through all this sound
The Victrola kept flinging
Dim snatches
That had no end,
No beginning.
'This Burrs, f'rinstance.
I'd like to smash his face!
Twisting your arm!
He's yellow, I'd like to bet!"
<>
Fiercely he struck
A match for her cigarette.
The candle flames stood stiff and tall:
And the shadows lay overlapped on the wall.
A candle guttered; its flame died:
The shadows rushed in from every side;
A sinister, swift procession,
Taking grim possession.
Some love is fire: some love is rust:
But the fiercest, cleanest love is lust.
And their lust was tremendous. It had the feel
Of hammers clanging; and stone; and steel:
And torches of the savage, roaring kind
That rip through iron, and strike men blind:
Of long trains crashing through caverns under
Grey trembling streets, like angry thunder
The gun flashed -
Crashed!
Staccato,
and vicious it spoke.
