From The New Yorker, via this and that.
It's gratifying to know that the Chudnovsky brothers featured in "The Mountains of Pi" are still doing interesting work - in this case, they helped to stitch together the digital pictures of the Unicorn tapestry at the Cloisters into a complete mosaic. If only Richard Preston provided more (heck, any) details about the algorithms they used.
- I associate this sound (of many small whirring fans) with any room professionally occupied by the Chudnovskys.
- The truth is that the modern world has lost touch with the meanings in the Unicorn tapestries.
Because I'm still not off my kungfu kick, I can't help but link to "Drunk Monk", an article inside the same Apr 11th issue. It's a cute story about a well-attended birthday party for a Shaolin monk in lower Manhattan. I particularly like this line: 'In a room where hair was fairly unpopular, you could spot Jim Jarmusch’s tall, fluffy white head.'
