First time I read J. D. Salinger was in high school, and I was surprised by its readability, given its reputation as a 'cool book'. Between then and now, I'd lost some patience for a jittery, judgmental teenager who should have just gone to bed. Too bad I don't remember how the Chinese translation handled all those 'goddamn's and 'knocked me out's. The title 守望者sounds certainly more wistful.
  • But if you thought about him (Mr. Spencer the History teacher) just enough and not too much, you could figure it out that he wasn't doing too bad for himself.
  • You take somebody old as hell, like old Spencer, and they can get a big bang out of buying a blanket.
  • I wouldn't have read it out loud to him if he'd written it - I really wouldn't. In the first place, I'd only written that damn note so that he wouldn't feel too bad about flunking me.
  • Which is something that gives me a royal pain in the ass. I mean if somebody yawns right while they're asking you to do them a goddamn favor.
  • It stinks, if you analyze it. I think if you don't really like a girl, you shouldn't horse around with her at all, and if you do like her, then you're supposed to like her face, and if you like her face, you ought to be careful about doing crumby stuff to it, like squirting water all over it.

Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" is your prototypical 穿越文. I wonder what is about the routine initial confusion of all those time-travellers that bores me so much.
