"Magic For Beginners"
Jun. 15th, 2008 09:26 amThe first story, 'The Faery Handbag' was very good, with offbeat, endearing details. I therefore had high hopes for the rest of Kelly Link's book, but somehow the magic leaked away.
__ If clothes are good, or even if they're bad in an interesting way, The Garment District is where they go when they die. You can tell that they're dead, because of the way that they smell.
__ He worked in a soup kitchen and made a Super 8 movie about Civil War reenactors who play extreme croquet in full costume instead of firing off cannons.
__ He was still way too smart, but he was finally smart enough to figure out how to fit in.
__ She collected ceramic frogs and knock-knock jokes.
'The Hortlak' opening: Eric was night, and Batu was day. The girl, Charley, was the moon.
__ the shovel, full of snow, like an enormous spoon full of falling light
__ She looked like someone had just set her favorite city on fire.
'The Cannon': She is called The Conversation, because she will speak courteously if you address her with a match. She is called The Only Answer, be- cause she only ever gives the same answer, no matter your question.
__ ...and they have built a nest on your yard, out of the bits of Time. And if you hold a magnifying glass over their nest, to see the ants dance and burn, Time will catch fire and you will be sorry.
__ "Jack, my love, my bird's nest, my bite, my scrap of porridge,"
Some people thought of vampires as rock stars, but really they were more like Martha Stewart. Vampires were prissy. They had to follow rules. They had to look good. Zombies weren't like that. You couldn't exorcise zombies. You didn't need luxury items like silver bullets or crucifixes or holy water.
__ (The children of the living and the dead most often take after their dead parents. Life, like red hair or blue eyes, is a recessive gene.)
__ It was astonishing how well the dead and living got along under normal circumstances, just so long as they could ignore each other.
__ "What's that one?" Elizabeth says, pointing at a squarish configuration of stars. "That's The Parking Structure," Jeremy says. "And right next to that is The Big Shopping Mall and The Lesser Shopping Mall."
