fiefoeI have already read 'Fleet of One' and 'In the Sort' in this collection. No matter what the transportation mode, the pace of McPhee's prose is always leisurely.
__ Add that to my ten-thousand-square-foot fishing shack, and I have suddenly become a rich alcoholic. Toni has had his wife, in Kentucky, check me out on the Internet. Now he says on the phone to her, "He's got a couple of daughters. See if they robbed a bank or a liquor store."
__ The white beam is galactic with bugs.
__ A horse, just walking around, can carry roughly two hundred and fifty pounds. A horse dragging a canal boat could move fifty tons.
__ (The train spotters) are sometimes described as a dying breed, but the Reaper evidently is not impatient.
__ "Air-traffic controllers have the great luxury of another dimension. Air-traffic controllers find this more complicated. We'd like to have a train change its altitude to get over another train."
