"Covering The Cops" (Edna Buchanan) / Calvin Trillin (1986)
Edna ("When you're really curious, you don't get grossed out") turns curiosity into high art: an editor was fuming about the fact that somebody had stolen his garbage cans. "All of a sudden, I heard Edna say, in that breathless voice, 'Were they empty or full?' "
Dade County, which includes Miami, almost should share top billing with the tireless reporter who covers its murders. These stories are straight out of Carl Hiassen: two brothers killed a third brother because he interrupted a checkers game; a father was killed at the surprise birthday party given for him by his thirty children.
Cf: Joan Didion's "Miami" for the McDuffie case. (Kudos to amazon's 'Search Inside a Book' feature.)
A bit background on the saying, "queer as folk".
