The slim volume makes a good travel companion. In its broad shape, it's a familiar fugitive/coming of age story. Octavia E. Butler offers a view onto an intriguing world - telepathetic Patternists enslaving the Mutes while at war with mutant Clayarks, but I'm not sure I'd want to stay in that world for long.
