  • (During early teens) things that only rolled around every few years, like elections and Olympics, suddenly assumed a magnitude you'd never known they possessed, simply because you were more media-aware.
  • English people shouldn't attempt to do anything in L.A.: it's all too much. We should just lie in a darkened room with a cold flannel until it's time to come home again.
There's only minimal overlap between Hornby's reading material and mine. One book I have read is his brother-in-law's "Enigma". Michael Lewis's "Liar's Poker" (international money markets) more complicated than "Money Ball" (baseball)?? Nyeh.

As if my to-read list weren't long enough:

Roddy Doyle - "Oh, Play That Thing"
Janet Malcolm - "Reading Cheknov"
Tom Shone - "Blockbuster"
Janathan Coe - "Like a Fiery Elephant"
Dennis Lehane - "Mystic River"
"Y: The Last Man"
Daniel Clowes - "David Boring"
Pete Dexter - "The Paperboy"
Francis Wheen - "How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered the World"
Richard Price - "Clockers"
Tobias Wolff - "Old School"
Cyril Connolly - "Enemies of Promise"
Charles Baxter - "Feast of Love"
Robert Harris - "Pompeii"
Robert Lowell / Ian Hamilton
"Something Happened"
"Stone Reader"
Jonathan Lethem - "The Fortress of Solitude"
Tim Adams - "Being John McEnroe"
"How to Breath Underwater" ('Pilgrims')
