If nothing else, this constancy of relationship makes A-series paper simpler to work with than older paper sizes such as Brief (13˝ by 16˝, and the source of the ‘briefs’ lawyers still use) or Foolscap (27˝ x 17˝) and its near-letter sized derivative, Foolscap Quarto (13.5˝ by 8.5˝, commonly if erroneously called ‘Foolscap’).

__ The Ugly Duchess is perhaps the best-known of his works. It served as a basis for John Tenniel's depiction of the Duchess in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
__ His sister Catherine and her husband suffered at Leuven in 1543 for what was then the capital offense of reading the Bible: he being decapitated, she buried alive in the square before the cathedral.

It is the only one of his works which slightly sharpened his self esteem: he admitted this to me unhesitatingly.
When one considers that Fragonard, who, in his best paintings, is still cultivating Watteau's garden, was born ten years after Watteau died, one can see how tenaciously eighteenth-century taste clung to the myth of the enchanted picnic.

According to Aesthetic Realism, the self is trying to come into composition with the world, and at the same time be different, individual, separate, free.
