This book explains some 'Better Living' wall calendars of my childhood. James Lileks's web pages that became this book might be even funnier.

• If your social circle smokes so much you have to put out five ashtrays that look like dogfood bowls for robot St. Bernards...
• an oversize Chuck Close painting of a broccoli's MRI hangs over the fire-place.
• Over the sofa, it's Francis Bacon's Skinned Horse Descending a Staircase.
• This is God's punishment...: "And a third part of their dwellings shall be wrapped in fabric, and the whole of their sofas shall suffer likewise, and the fourth part of their walls sheathed in a style whose contrasting nature is loud and vexatious like the clashing of shields..."
• Note how the other arrows point to the corner of the room, drawing your eye to.. the corner of the room. Yes, let everyone know you're coming up in the world. You've got one of those newfangled corners everyone's talking about.
  
• Eventually you'll be stone blind, sitting on a street corner with dark glasses, a can of pencils, and a sign that says, wallpaper and bedspread once matched. thought it mattered.
