Alfie the convalescent:

• Oh, the things I could tell about myself if I were to let myself go!
  
• You must never give yourself time to think, turn to your routine like a blind man turns to his stick.
  
• They've got an interest, see, these bent old boys, and same as I always say, an interest not only keeps you going, but it keeps you young. Those old boys will always carry on right until they day they carry them off.
• After all, you don't want to get that intimate that you're on striking terms.
  
• Nearly everything is worth it at the time.
  
• I've usually got one or two little voices going on in my head. I don't think it's that I'm a nutter or anything of that sort, I think it's just that I'm open-minded.
