His bravado slips just a bit.

• (Seeing his new-born son) - At first it's hard to believe. Then you get a funny sensation, like when you are going round a street corner somewhere and you come on a military band playing.
  
• (Slipping a musical rattle he bought into his son's cot) - You do something then you fell ashamed of your impulses.
  
• (Alfie the teddy bear connoisseur:) - It's the luck that the woman who made it... has struck it off dead perfect just by chance. It's the same with most cars.
  
• If there's one thing I detest it's walking about with other people on my mind.
  
• Now a bloke can often kid himself that he's having a grand passion when in fact he's simply out of condition. He hears this thudding in his ears, and he thinks the whole bleeding universe is shifting in sympathy with him, when all he needs is a good working medicine and some fresh air and exercise.
