With Ma's absence, the most interesting part in the last section of the book is how Grandmarelates to Jack.

  • I don’t think I’m like a monkey like the paper people said, but I don’t know, the ones on the wildlife planet don’t have stairs.
  • ...experiences have given you, ah, enormous empathy with the suffering children of the world.” “Not just children,” says Ma.  “People are locked up in all sorts of ways.”
  • The world is always changing brightness and hotness and soundness, I never know how it’s going to be the next minute.
  • “Yeah. Except nothing in TV ever stinged me.” “Good point,” says Dr. Clay, nodding. “‘Human kind cannot bear very much reality.’”
  • When I was four I thought everything in TV was just TV, then I was five and Ma unlied about lots of it being pictures of real and Outside being totally real. Now I’m in Outside but it turns out lots of it isn’t real at all.
  • Grandma comes in with a stripey thing on like underwear and T-shirt stuck together with beads, also a plastic bag on her head
    she says is called a shower cap even though we’re having a bath. I don’t laugh at her, only inside.
  • There’s lots of every kind of thing in the world but it all costs money, even stuff to throw away, like the man in the line ahead of us in the convenience store buys a something in a box and rips the box and puts it in the trash right away.
  • I guess the time gets spread very thin like butter over all the world, the roads and houses and playgrounds and stores, so there’s only a little smear of time on each place, then everyone has to hurry on to the next bit. {This comment rings a bit false, but it's a nice metaphor.}
  • I’ve been in the world three weeks and a half, I still never know what’s going to hurt.
  • I look back one more time. It’s like a crater, a hole where something happened. Then we go out the door.
